'The Contea degli Angeli' is in an ideal position in one of the truly unspoilt areas in Central Italy. Emmersed in 11 hectares of olive groves, an organic vegetable garden (serving the restaurant), a natural small lake, a swimming pool and a shared area for barbeque and relaxing. The 'gymhouse' is perfect for groups for yoga and seminaries. All offering a relaxed atmosphere to make you feel at home. Castell'Azzara borders on the Natural Reserve of Monte Penna, beneath the volcanic cone of Monte Amiata. Its position offers hiking, walking and cycling excursions through the magical woods of the Natural Reserve with pine trees, oak, ash, beech, chestnut and mediterranean shrub; natural home of foxes, porcupines, wild boar, roe deer, badgers and even wolves can be observed without risk. A territory of hidden caves and water sources attracts a wide range of birdlife, eagles, bats, hobbies, sparrow-hawks, lanners, vultures (the Egyptian Vulture in particular), reptiles, and wild mammals. The Cinta Senese pig, a medieval pig, probably born on Amiata and the Amiata Donkey find their home here too.

Between 25/40 km you can discover the archeological sites in the villages of Sorano, Sovana and Pitigliano, Bagno Vignoni, San Casciano dei Bagni and Bagno San Filippo. All surrounded by hospitable warm thermal baths. Ancient architecture of medieval castles, the abbeys of the Roman period (Abbadia San Salvatore, and Sant’Antimo), the Sforzesca di Castell’Azzara, the mansion Bourbon del Monte a Piancastagnaio, the renaissance and baroque churches, and the Peschiera at Santa Fiora all excite the visitor. In fact the area might be called an open air museum with ancient art such as the Madonna by Simone Martini and another by Pietro Lorenzetti in the church of Saints Stefano and Degna, an alter piece by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the Madonna of the Cherries at the Saints Peter and Paul church in Roccalbegna. Examples of the Sienese school from the 13th to 18th century can be found between Castel del Piano and Piancastagnaio, including the Pieve ad Lamulas, in Montelaterone, with the splendid wooden Madonna of the 15th century and the Della Robbia ceramics of Santa Fiora and Radicofani, just to name a few. Contemporary art has found a place in Bocceggiano, Montieri with “Il Giardino dei Suoni di Paul Fuchs” (The Garden of Sounds by Paul Fuchs), where more than 20 works in iron, bronze and copper, positioned to create sounds in harmony with the surrounding environment; “Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri” (Daniel Spoerri's Garden), in Seggiano, displays a collection of works gathered by the Swiss artist. In Montegiove, Castel del Piano, “Il Giardino di Piero Bonacina – Arte a Parte –“ (Piero Bonacina’s Garden) a landscape of sculptures made of wood, metal, cement and stone. Not forgetting that in such an area rich in wildlife, excellent raw materials, local protected products and a strong food and wine culture almost everywhere the culnary delights abound.

See you in La Contea Degli Angeli.
